Poles Aloud Show – 17th & 19th Jan 2016

Today we’re discussing how the same series known to us from childhood can turn out to be different depending on the country you’re from. We’ve discovered that the Moomins which the British audience has watched over the years are not the same as the ones Poles know from their TV experience. Well, they are quite similar, however there’s a twist – so do tune in to our show to find out more.

School’s out for summer! In Poland that is, sorry to get your hopes up. We’re looking at the end of school report/ certificate called świadectwo in Polish and talk about the most popular types of summer activities.

Sorry – a major cultural difference between Polish and British attitude when using this word, so we’re going to look at some of the reasons why Brits overuse it and Poles don’t use enough of it (or do they?).

It’s never boring in Polish politics – we’re discussing the most recent upheaval in the Polish government and the aftermath of the wire-tapping affair (or as we call it, the waiter-gate).

The political turmoil is followed closely by a social outcry about a recent campaign discouraging women from putting off motherhood (and we called it the baby-gate).

And as usual the recent headlines form Poland, look at weird and wonderful news from around the world and teaching you a word or two of Polish.

On the show today we’re hearing from Kuba Mikurda, a Polish film critic and film maker, talking about the Polish classics on tour in the UK, “Martin Scorsese Presents Masterpieces of Polish Cinema“. The films are quite an intensive look at the Polish historical and cultural background, but Kuba finds a few titles that would appeal to the British audience without having any prior knowledge of the Polish cinema.

Ahoy sailors! Saying goodbye to the Polish Film Festival Kinoteka in a style.

In the second part of the show, we’re going to tackle Polish politics and look at the recent presidential election in Poland, its outcome and international reactions.

You might remember that the census 2011 brought some interesting facts about the language distribution in UK, namely that Polish is now the main language spoken in England after English.
