Also on Poles Aloud, the sound of Polish music scene in 2015 (mostly pop and rock) and some of the most bizarre items from World Weird Web.

Poles Aloud Show – 16th & 18th August

This week we’re brining you some classical Polish ballads to the airwaves – cuddle up with your sweetheart (or a pillow, they don’t complain that much I’ve noticed) and listen to romantic Polish tunes.

On a completely different note, we spoke to George Byczynski from the British Poles campaign about their next initiative which is to encourage Polish people to donate blood to NHS. Follow #PolishBlood on twitter & facebook to see the feedback from the public and tune in to Poles Aloud to find out the details (a lot of Poles will donate their blood on Thu 20th August).

Poles Aloud Show – 31st May & 2nd June

On the show today we’re hearing from Kuba Mikurda, a Polish film critic and film maker, talking about the Polish classics on tour in the UK, “Martin Scorsese Presents Masterpieces of Polish Cinema“. The films are quite an intensive look at the Polish historical and cultural background, but Kuba finds a few titles that would appeal to the British audience without having any prior knowledge of the Polish cinema.

Ahoy sailors! Saying goodbye to the Polish Film Festival Kinoteka in a style.

In the second part of the show, we’re going to tackle Polish politics and look at the recent presidential election in Poland, its outcome and international reactions.

We also bring you the recent headlines form Poland, look at weird and wonderful news from around the world and teach you a word or two of Polish.

Poles Aloud Show – 12th & 14th April 2015

In the first part of the show we’re talking about the anniversary of the Smolensk plane crash (10-04-2010) and explain why all the Polish elite was flying over to Katyn. This tragedy initially united the Poles, but just few weeks after the mourning the opinions on Russians’ involvement and conspiracy theories divided the country till this day.

We’re going to hear from Anna, born and brought up in the UK to Polish parents and Paul, a teenager who came over to Britain after 2004, as they share their views and feelings on the Smolensk plane crash (the interviews were recorded a few days after the tragedy, in 2010).

bocian

Polish symbols and traditions – we’re adding another one to this rich and expanding list and this time it’s white stork (bocian). They’ve been known in the Polish folk culture for centuries and we’re looking at some of the myths and legends behind this Polish icon. Check out the village where there are more white storks than the locals. “One in four (storks) is Polish”, we’re looking behind the statistics to reveal sad truth about the declining number of white storks in Poland.

Today we’re going to introduce you to a Polish phrase “Matka Polka” (Mother Poland) and try to explain its ambivalent connotation in the Polish language and social life.

Another important date in May this year is Saturday 23rd May – the finale of the Eurovision Song Contest, we can’t wait! Seriously. So, we’re going to discuss the English and Polish entries for this year and what chances they have for a victory (let’s hope better than last year).

All that with our standard blocks “World Weird Web” & Polish for beginners and plenty of music – stay tuned.
