On the show today we’re hearing from Kuba Mikurda, a Polish film critic and film maker, talking about the Polish classics on tour in the UK, “Martin Scorsese Presents Masterpieces of Polish Cinema“. The films are quite an intensive look at the Polish historical and cultural background, but Kuba finds a few titles that would appeal to the British audience without having any prior knowledge of the Polish cinema.

Poles Aloud Show – 15th & 17th March 2015

In Britain we celebrate the Mothering Sunday on 15th March this year, in Poland it’s still a while to go before the chocolates and flowers are handed out to mums – Dzień Matki is an annual affair always celebrated on 26th May. Much better weather prospects 😉

Today we’re going to introduce you to a Polish phrase “Matka Polka” (Mother Poland) and try to explain its ambivalent connotation in the Polish language and social life.

Another important date in May this year is Saturday 23rd May – the finale of the Eurovision Song Contest, we can’t wait! Seriously. So, we’re going to discuss the English and Polish entries for this year and what chances they have for a victory (let’s hope better than last year).

All that with our standard blocks “World Weird Web” & Polish for beginners and plenty of music – stay tuned.

Poles Aloud Show – 15th & 17th February 2015

A journey back into a Polish childhood will take us in front of the telly (yeah, yeah, terrible!) to find out what sort of programmes were popular when growing up in Poland in the 80s and 90s. We’re going to look at children’s TV shows like “Tik-Tak” and “5-10-15” and compare them with the British “Blue Peter”. Check out some of the samples of the opening tunes together with short bits of the shows. What do you think?

Also on the show; a mix of headlines from current events back in Poland and some great selection of Polish tunes.

What makes you spring out of bed? Definitely not the one hour loss, which we experienced on Sunday 30th March, by the way – remember to move your clocks forward. The spring is here and summer is just round the corner.

The English tourists are used to it, the Polish are nicely surprised to see it – we’re looking at some basic aspects of sightseeing that makes a tourist’s life just this little bit easier.

The Voice – dreams coming true for some, while tears for the others. Comparing the Polish and English version of the hit song competition.

Liked it? Good – download it here and support the Bristolian Christina Marie in the upcoming finals.

Poles Aloud show 19

How to beat a cold? A very up to date topic for a lot of people at this time of the year (including our presenters), so we’re hoping to share some useful but mostly utterly bizarre cold remedies as according to a Polish babcia (granny). Think about sticking a garlic clove up your nose, plus many more.

Sochi 2014 equals success and that’s for both Polish and British teams (thrilled about the mutual accomplishments). We’re looking at the medal table and stories of hard working individuals behind the glitzy fame of last few days.

EU representative in Bristol – We went to László Andor‘s lecture on “Labour Migration in the European Union. The Inconvenient Truth” and will share an audio clip from his facts packed speech. You can also read the whole lecture here.
