Poles Aloud Show – 29th Nov & 1st Dec

Time for Polish Halloween this week. At the beginning of November Poles celebrated All Saints’ Day in a calm and peaceful manner, remembering all those loved ones who passed away. The end of November marks a change in tone as Poles gather around to discover what the future holds for them and join in with the parties. Today we’re going to talk about Andrzejki and Katarzynki night and how the Polish tradition makes them a unique celebration worth getting to know.

The symbol of the Andrzejki Night is “lanie wosku” (wax melting) – find out more about this fortune telling tradition by visiting our “how to” guide here.

There’s a reflective tone on the show today as we’re looking at the Polish All Saints Day celebrations and discussing how those differ from the western party style Halloween. Check out the video below to see the “sea of candles” typical for the Polish All Saints Day.

Still in a melancholic mood, we’re looking at the parliamentary election that took place in Poland last Sunday and debate what the aftermath of a right wing win will bring for Poland.

Have you seen the Hairy Bikers’ trip to Poland? Not yet? It’s a must watch, but not on an empty stomach. Have they done justice to the Polish cuisine? Will every person in Britain now know what bigos is and how to make your own sausage? We’ll have a little chat about that on the show today.

Poles Aloud Show – 16th & 18th August

This week we’re brining you some classical Polish ballads to the airwaves – cuddle up with your sweetheart (or a pillow, they don’t complain that much I’ve noticed) and listen to romantic Polish tunes.

On a completely different note, we spoke to George Byczynski from the British Poles campaign about their next initiative which is to encourage Polish people to donate blood to NHS. Follow #PolishBlood on twitter & facebook to see the feedback from the public and tune in to Poles Aloud to find out the details (a lot of Poles will donate their blood on Thu 20th August).

Summer’s in full swing and we take a look at Polish gardens and balconies decorated with colourful flowers and plants. It’s incredible to see what sort of blossom islands can be created in small spaces of Polish balconies.

As the conflict in Syria continues, Poland has finally opened its borders to a small group of Syrian refugees. The efforts of moving the families were possible thanks to Miriam Shaded from the Estera charity (Fundacja Estera). We’re sharing stories of some of the Syrian families and look at Poles’ reactions to the new visitors.

Poles Aloud Show – 14th & 16th June

It’s never boring in Polish politics – we’re discussing the most recent upheaval in the Polish government and the aftermath of the wire-tapping affair (or as we call it, the waiter-gate).

The political turmoil is followed closely by a social outcry about a recent campaign discouraging women from putting off motherhood (and we called it the baby-gate).

And as usual the recent headlines form Poland, look at weird and wonderful news from around the world and teaching you a word or two of Polish.
