Poles Aloud Show – 18th & 20th January 2015

It’s middle of the January, so it might sound rather bizarre when I ask “When do you take down your Christmas Tree?”. In Poland, we tend to keep it beyond the twelfth day of Christmas – find out more about this tradition and the confusion it causes.

What’s the talk of the town in Poland right now? It must be the controversial “morning after pill” and one IT guy is to blame.

We also bring you a mix of headlines from current events back in Poland and some great selection of Polish tunes.

On the show this week, we’re looking at the Polish caricatures; their styles and messages they convey, mentioning as well the Polish School of Posters (Polska Szkola Plakatu).

Poles can be quite generous, especially around this time of the year, as it’s the annual charity event known as WOSP or the Great Orchestra of Christmas CharityLOGO_WOSP2_PODGLAD-300x289

It’s a New Year and traditionally we’re anxious and dubious about setting up some ambitious goals for the upcoming year. Here on Poles Aloud we’re going to look at what Poles and Brits chose for their New Year’s resolutions and how well they’re doing with keeping the promises.

We also have the usual mix of news from Poland together with Polish music and language section, so tune in! You can find us on two community radio stations across the South West:

Halloween is approaching fast, so we’ll take you through some of the spooky and weird range of Polish demons and monsters. Be prepared to be afraid! Bua ha ha!

What a great sunny weekend in the South West, perfect for playing some upbeat tunes all the way from Poland…or Germany! Check out Germany’s DSDS 2014 winner - Aneta Sablik.

It’s getting hot in Poland and it’s not due to the summer temperatures. We’re looking at the current “political earthquake” around secretly recorded tapes of private talks between a government minister and Poland’s central bank chief.

The Monty Python gang had to face it years ago, but for the Malta Festival Poznan it’s a very recent thing – a religious outrage (2011 protests in France) towards a piece of art (“Golgota Picnic” by Rodrigo Garcia) led to the show cancellation.

Today we’re talking about studying medicine in the UK and hear our stand-in presenter’s story. Karolina recently spent a few weeks in Trinidad and Tobago practising her acquired skills, but before that she’s worked hard for 5 years studying to be a doctor with the University of Bristol. Good luck doctor Mazan and let’s hope your experiences will be much better than dr Turk’s :) (for any Scrubs fans out there).
