Celebrated for her poems by Poles, and pushed away because of the fame she gained by her native Romani people – Papusza (Bronisława Wajs). We’re exploring the Polish-Romani poet and talking about the recent film depicting her intriguing yet tragic life.

EU elections – May 2014 is the time to cast the vote for your choice of an MEP. Who can vote and where, how does the EU voting system differ from the typical British one and why should the anti-immigrant parties start being nice to the EU migrants?

Update on the New Year’s resolutions – what, you haven’t got one yet? Shame on you – everyone fancies a challenge, why not try how far can you go this year. Who knows, you might actually succeed! Michael’s learning to juggle and Magda’s on a mission of reading more books to boost up the reading levels of her natives.

Plus the usual mix of news, music and language (Polish for beginners) – check us out on facebook & twitter.

“In War and in Peace – Poles Who Came to the West Country”. The event will take place on Tuesday 28th January 2014 in The Apostle Room at Clifton Cathedral commencing at 7-30pm. The Lord Mayor of Bristol, Councillor Faruk Choudhury will be present at this important event. Copies of the book will be available for collection by contributors and purchase by others.

Join us for a weekly update on all things Polish. We’re looking at the total sum raised by the biggest charity organisation in Poland – WOŚP or the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity. Also checking out what its energetic leader, Jurek Owsiak, has been up to this week – some high quality spontaneity, is all I can say :)

Do you always have to be on the top of the lead table to celebrate your success? No – is the answer; we’re simply happy for the Polish participants of the Dakar 2014 to be in the first ten or first twenty table this year and want to shout out about it.

And our favourite topic on this show – immigration. What scary headlines and figures can be found in the press this week?

Don’t forget our usual language block Polish for beginners and plenty of pop and rock tunes for your ears to enjoy.

And a message from the Anglo-Polish Society about their book launch in January.

Poles Aloud show 14

Every Sunday at 5pm on Somer Valley FM & Monday at 1pm on Bradley Stoke Radio

It’s a very special day today in Poland, an annual charity event raising funds for children and elderly. WOŚP aka the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity (Wielka Orkiestra Świątecznej Pomocy) has been active for over 20 years, has saved countless lives and is a great cause that gets people together, even if it’s for only one day a year – so it’s sort of “Christmas in January feel good factor”. Below, a footage of the beginnings and more recent years – sie ma!

We’re also talking about the Polish regional TV and one of its more unusual programmes, discussing the thickness of ice in winter – fascinating, isn’t it. Michael didn’t think so though 😉

Plus plenty of Polish music and our weekly language corner, teaching you a word or two of Polish.

Thanks for tuning in – Dziękujemy!

Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances we had to cancel an annual music and art event hosted in the Colston Hall’s foyer on Sun 12th January 3-10pm. We’re very sad to have it cancelled, but our weekly radio show still carries on as usual.
