Poles Aloud show 7

Every Sunday at 5pm on Somer Valley FM & Monday at 1pm on Bradley Stoke Radio

On Saturday night we celebrated the 50th anniversary of Dr. Who in UK, but what would be a Polish equivalent to this iconic character? I didn’t have to think long about it at all – it must be the one and only Mr. Blob (Pan Kleks). The enigmatic head master of a magical academy was created by one of Poland’s famous children’s writers, Jan Brzechwa, and brought to the silver screen in the 80s by Krzysztof Gradowski. He might not have the Doctor’s sonic screw driver, but with hordes of fairy tale creatures and young companions, he’s always on the lookout for an adventure.

You can buy a set of Mr. Blob’s 3 films on amazon, but for now check out bits of Mr. Blob in Space (starts from the third minute) and enjoy :)

We’re going to look at Poland’s best cities to live in according to safety, child care places, cultural scene or simply the general quality of life. And also check out the British ranking just for comparison.

Also on the show – the usual mixture of news ranging from current issues, economy, sport onto the entertainment.

POLES ALOUD – bringing you a slice of Poland every week in the South West.

Apart from a weekly radio show, we also organise a free annual music, art and culture event in the Colston Hall’s foyer – find out more details here and on facebook.

Poles Aloud show 6

Every Sunday at 5pm on Somer Valley FM – listen again & Monday at 1pm on Bradley Stoke Radio

It’s been a busy week in Poland with some alternative “celebrations” of the Independence Day (11th November), positive news from the economy sector and a fusion of Slavic traditions taken on by the modern music scene (check out and decide for yourself if you love it or hate it – the song that’s divided the nation by Donatan-Cleo “My Slowianie”).

Also on the show – who’s the happiest bunch of professionals? Can money buy you happiness or is there a profession that can withstand any economic turmoil? We’re looking at the Polish and English survey of careers. And does the new Polish football coach have reasons to be stressed about his new job? (oh yes!).

Apart from a weekly radio show, we also organise a free annual music, art and culture event in the Colston Hall’s foyer – find out more details here and on facebook.

Poles Aloud show 5

Every Sunday at 5pm on Somer Valley FM – listen again & Monday at 1pm on Bradley Stoke Radio – listen again

As Britain is pausing for a peaceful reflection during the Remembrance Sunday, the Poles are preparing to celebrate their Independence Day (11th November) – we’re going to take a brief walk through the history to find out more and also to look at the current festivities back in Poland.

Did you have a favourite cartoon as a child? I’m sure you must have! We’re discussing some of Poland and Britain’s most popular children’s animations that stuck in our heads throughout the years. And we’re finding some similar cartoon that despite the distance were watched by both Polish and British children.

Also on the show – news about Poland’s cultural contributions to UNESCO and UN, a spy report found in an antique table and the latest fashion for the Winter Olympics in Sochi. Plus our weekly block teaching you how to speak Polish.

Apart from a weekly radio show, we also organise a free annual music, art and culture event in the Colston Hall’s foyer – find out more details here and on facebook.

Poles Aloud show 4

Tune in to find out what those Eastern Europeans & a Geordie are up to this week :)

Every Sunday at 5pm on Somer Valley FM – listen again & Monday at 1pm on Bradley Stoke Radio – listen again

Immigration – we’re doing a little myth breaking on the show today looking at David Cameron’s recent speech, as featured in the Telegraph. The scary world of millions of foreigners stealing British jobs (according to some of the press) versus reality. We’re also discussing the spirit of competition in and outside of UK, as a possible clue to the success of the migrant workers.

Halloween versus All Saints Day – Are there any Halloween celebrations in Poland? How is the melancholic day of reflection (All Saints) competing with the westernised idea of fun. A virtual grave yard for those, who can’t visit relatives in person and a coffin calendar that would wake some of the dead.

Tadeusz Mazowiecki – remembering the first non-communist prime minister in Central & Eastern Europe after World War II. Who was he and why was his role so important in co-creating a free and independent Poland.

Economy – East goes further East. As England visited China, Poland followed suit and searched for contacts with South Korea promoting Polish industry. Plus few other economy related news items.

Apart from a weekly radio show, we also organise a free annual music, art and culture event in the Colston Hall’s foyer – find out more details here and on facebook.
